TV talk show star to support North Koreans
Leslie Benfield, an African-American woman known as a guest of the popular TV talk show "Minyeodeuleui Suda (Girls` Talk)," has recently been appointed as a goodwill ambassador of a local nonprofit organization supporting North Korean human rights.
The Network for North Korean Democracy and Human Rights asked Benfield to take the honorary position to help the group raise public awareness of North Korean issues.
Fluent in Korean, the 37 year-old American has been supporting the human rights advocacy group and is said to have interests in helping North Korean defectors receive proper education in South Korea.
In a recent interview with local dailies, Benfield said that she started her volunteering service after she saw a picture of a malnourished North Korean mother giving a child her dry breast.
"It was hard to believe the picture was real. It hurt my heart so badly," said Benfield in Korean.
"I want to continue missionary service for North Koreans ... I think it is also important to let people know about the real situation in North Korea," she said.
Benfield came to Korea as a Christian missionary in 2005 and studied at the Graduate School of Public Administration at Seoul National University. She has been working at a number of Korean organizations, including the Traffic Broadcasting System run by the Seoul City government and the organizing committee of the APEC ministerial meeting.
She is currently working at the Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency, making herself known also as the first foreigner to be employed by the state-run organization as a regular staff.
She grabbed media attention with her talented language skills and a sense of humor on KBS`s talk show "Minyeodeuleui Suda (Girls` Talk)," which airs every Sunday morning. The entertainment show deals with images of Korea and its people in the eyes of 16 foreign ladies.
