How I Came to be Involved with North Korean Human Rights
When I say I am involved with North Korean human rights, Koreans are curious how I, an American, got started. I first traveled to Korea for a two-week vacation in 2004 and was fascinated by what I saw and also by the sound of the Korean language. After returning home, I started taking Korean classes in DC and also read the online English versions of the Korean newspapers. When you read articles about Korea, inevitably many of them are about North Korea. The many articles about negotiations, nuclear issues, etc., were pretty boring, but the ones about the actual people and living conditions in North Korea jumped out at me.
I don’t know exactly why, but the more I read about the plight of the North Korean people the more I wanted to know. It sucked me in, I couldn’t ignore it. I think it’s because as an American, freedom is one of the things I value most. Yet here is a people who have virtually no freedom -- they are virtually slaves to the government, which rules through fear, violence, and propaganda. That fact offends me deeply. Also, in English class as a middle school student I read parts of Anne Frank’s diary, which was taught by a German American teacher who made sure we learned about the Holocaust and its lessons. He and many others in our society stressed “Never again.” But as I’ve learned more about world history and North Korea and kept up with current events, I have sadly realized that that phrase falls short and ultimately could even be seen as misleading. While the phrase’s intent is noble, reality is more like “Again and again.” Since the phrase took root in Western culture in response to the Holocaust, in fact many regimes have terrorized their own people (Pol Pot in Cambodia, Mao in China, the Kims in North Korea, Middle Eastern dictators, Rwanda, Darfur…). This trend will not stop -- every generation must anticipate oppressive governments and oppose them wherever they spring up.
Koreans often ask me, “Why North Korea?” when there are so many other problems in the world. Admittedly, supporting the North Korean people’s right to liberty is the not the only significant task in the world today, but it is the one I know of and therefore the one I must fight. So what to do, then? In my next column I will talk a little bit about my volunteer activism and in more detail about what I do as NKnet’s English webmaster.

어떻게 내가 북한 인권에 관심을 갖게 됐는가
외국인인 내가 북한인권운동에 참여한다고 하면 사람들이 어떻게 관심을 갖게 됐느냐는 질문을 자주 한다. 2004년 봄에 한국에 처음으로 2주동안 와서 새로운 느낌과 경험을 많이 얻고 한국어의 소리를 처음으로 들었는데 너무 좋았다. 미국 워싱턴 디시에 돌아가서 한국어를 배우기 시작하면서 온라인 한국 신문의 영문 기사를 읽었다. 한국에 대한 글을 읽으면 북한에 대한 글도 많이 나온다. 핵 문제, 6자 회담, 등에 대한 기사는 대부분 지루한 편이었지만 북한의 주민과 현재 실제 생활에 대한 글들은 내게는 큰 충격이었다.
왠지 잘 모르겠지만 북한 주민의 상태를 알 수록 더 알고 싶었다. 북한주민의 끔찍한 실상에 끌렸고 또 외면 할 수 없었다. 아마도 자유를 제일 소중히 여기기 때문일 것이다. 그러나 북한 주민들은 자유가 거의 없고 공포, 폭력, 선전으로 다스리는 정부의 노예들 같다. 그 사실에 깊이 분개한다. 그리고 중학때 영어 수업에서 안네 프랑크의 일기를 읽고 우리 독일계 미국인 선생님께서 홀로코스트와 그 교훈에 대해서 가르쳐주신 것이 생각났다. 그 선생님을 포함하여 서양 사회 사람들은 “네버 어게인(Never again)”를 강조했다. 그런데 북한과 세계사, 시사문제 등을 더 배웠더니, 그 표현은 좀 부족하고 사람이 오해하기 쉬운 편이라는 것을 깨닫게 되었다. 네버 어게인의 의도는 고결하지만 사실은 “어게인앤드어게인(Again and again)”이 더 적합하다. 홀로코스트에 대응하여 네버 어게인이라는 표현이 펴진 후에, 자기 주민들을 공포에 떨게 하고 강하게 탄압하는 그런 정권들이 상당히 많았다. 캄보디아의 폴 포트, 중국의 마오쩌둥, 북한의 김씨정권, 중동 독재들, 르완다, 다르푸르, 등이 그 예라고 할 수 있다. 이러한 경향은 끝이 없을 것이다. 앞으로도 계속 있을 것이다. 따라서 모든 세대들마다 자유를 보호하려고 탄압하는 정부를 예상하고 반대해야 한다.
이 세상에서 여러 가지 큰 문제 있는데 한국 사람들이 저에게 “다른 나라보다 왜 북한에 관심이 있냐고?” 가끔 물어본다. 이 세상에서 북한 주민의 자유와 권리뿐만 이니라 수없이 많은 문제들이 있다는 것을 인정하지만 나는 북한문제를 더 잘 알기 때문에 그것을 위해서 싸워야 한다.
그럼 할일이 뭔가? 두번째 칼럼에서 제 북한인권 자원봉사 행동과 제 북한민주화네트워크의 영문 웹마스터 역할에 대해서 쓸 것이다.
